The best possible composting for our climate
Our story (so far)
Dr. Brook Clinton started Capital Scraps with a passion to implement composting at full power. Urban food scraps are powerhouse materials in the right hand. In landfill they cause problems, methane, leachate and bad odours. But Brook knew you could flip that story and produce many benefits instead.
What started as a backyard enterprise has grown to service hundreds of Canberra households and other places where food scraps are generated.
We can tell by the quality of the end product that itโs special stuff. Plants of all varieties enjoy sending their roots into it. And the complex microbiology and biochemistry that we harness brings forth another huge benefit - the transformation of carbon into more stable forms.
Innovating for the future
Weโve shown what we can do at pilot stage and using limited infrastructure. Understanding the biology is critical when it comes to composting. And it pays to start small (just ask us about microhydrology!) But exciting plans are afoot to scale our operations. There are thousands of tonnes of food scraps looking for a better option.
Next steps involve:
scaling up to over 1000 tonnes processed per year
tackling bioplastics and other packaging waste along with food scraps
providing service to more families and businesses
